Becky Brown – Bronze Life Master

ACBL District 4

I’m thrilled to learn that I have achieved bronze life master status. I just earned my life master status while playing with my brother Dan Brown who lives in North Carolina – I live in Lancaster PA – on December 18 in the Winter Wonderland online event.

My parents, particularly my dad, drug me kicking and screaming to the bridge table when I was a teen. But when I retired I didn’t really have any plans so I went to a bridge class. Well, that’s all it took – most of my friends now are bridge players we all started together in the same class. It is my friends who I credit for my achieving this rank. They played with me at the club and in tournaments. I owe them a lot.

Also at the club an A player once held up a green pass card and said Becky let me introduce you to the pass card. So also to those who encouraged and gave me advice, I owe this rank title.

Bridge helped get through 2020.

Nancy Rauscher – Club Master

ACBL District 4

I have been playing bridge socially once a week with a group of friends for about 7 years now. I attended Ami bridge in Langhorne sporadically over the last few years. It took quite a long time to reach the 20 point level. Whenever I played competitive Bridge with my partner we rarely ever got points.

I did play in the national tournament in Philadelphia two years ago and managed to get about 5 points. We have been playing online with Ami bridge for about six months now and slowly but surely I have accumulated 20 points. It takes getting .22 points or .40 points over a long time, but it paid off.

I have already gotten 1.3 points this week alone, so hopefully it won’t take so long to get another 20 points.

Betty Youmans – Sapphire Life Master

ACBL District 4

How could I possibly top the great write-up that my brother, Rich Hartz, wrote?

I would only add that it has been my privilege to teach bridge (in pre-pandemic days) at my local club (Mohawk Valley Bridge Association).

Further, the many friendships that I have made over the years while playing bridge have certainly enriched my life.

I have played in many tournaments in District 4 and elsewhere. I am always impressed with the hard work and dedication of the tournament organizers and directors. I look forward to co-chairing regionals in Syracuse and Rochester when face-to-face play resumes.

Before the pandemic, I did not play on BBO. Now I play daily (often multiple games a day). BBO has allowed me to connect with partners who live in Canada, Virginia and Florida as well as my favorite partner, my brother, Rich.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to share my enthusiasm for bridge and the importance it has in my life.

Rich Hartz – Ruby Life Master

ACBL District 4

I have been asked to share a bit of my story in achieving the rank of Ruby Life Master. It is a rank which comes with a sense of joy, satisfaction and accomplishment. In reality, the story is a simple one – good partners!

I have been fortunate to enjoy the game with a number of wonderful friends and partners over the (many) years it has taken to achieve this rank. In recent years, since becoming a Silver LM, there have been three primary partners. My sister Betty Youmans, who has become a Sapphire at the same time I have become a Ruby, has been my primary tournament partner in recent years. When I retired in July 2019, we set as a goal helping her win the Unit 112 Mini McKenney in her category (2500-3500). In the process, I was also able to also win in the 1000-1500 category. In the fall of 2019, there was an eager new player in our club who really wanted to play and learn. I have enjoyed a regular partnership with Kristen Sullivan since that time. While it began as a mentoring relationship, it really has become a great friendship as well. She has also shared her passion for the game with her husband and two teenage daughters. Since COVID hit, BBO has been a constant outlet for keeping us sane. We play casually for an hour with two other club members almost every weekday and we play regularly in our Club games and other BBO tournaments. Finally, it has been a joy to see my son (Richard, Jr.) develop his passion for the game and to play with him when his schedule allows. Hopefully they won’t read this, but both Kristen and Rich will be much better players than I before they are done.

As most of my play has been at the local level over the years, I would be remiss not to recognize my wonderful home club. The Mohawk Valley Bridge Association is a great, welcoming club. I have many friendships among club members. Our President, Ann Smallen, has done a great job of moving the club forward during recent years. She and Mike Mihevc have given many hours of service moving us into the on-line age. Many others (too many to mention) have served in a variety of capacities over the years. I am thankful for all of them.

Margaret Greeenawalt – Bronze Life Master

ACBL District 4

When I first started playing bridge and taking lessons, the title “Life Master” seemed remote at best. After some time and many club games, I went to my first tournament at the urging of our beloved teacher, Bobbie Gomer, earning my first points of color. With the help of friends, I eventually achieved Life Master. After that milestone, I greatly increased time away from home, consequently reducing time at the bridge table.

Then came the Pandemic and Bridge Base became the gift that kept giving.

Playing with people I knew from various clubs offered the opportunity for socialization and intellectual focus. The immediate availability of played hands to review & compare provided strategic insight. Zoom bridge lessons sharpened my game. The Common game analysis was consistently interesting. More points accumulated and my Bronze level was achieved
Virtual games have been my Bridge Renaissance and for that I am grateful.
While I naturally to look forward to in-person club bridge, I wish there would be a hybrid option for continued remote club play with our friends.

Betty-Jeanne Korson – Sectional Master

ACBL District 4

I began playing bridge in January, 2014 after the loss of my husband of 61 years of marriage. Since we had never played bridge together, it was a way of recovering from my grief, as it was a totally new experience, separate from my personal life.

Bridge was a new beginning, as the way I played in college in the fifties was totally different from the way I was learning now. Bridge lessons and good partners helped me bring my game up to speed. Joining the ACBL was also a good way of keeping up with the latest bridge news.

I enjoy playing in local clubs and now online, although I sorely miss the give and take of personal contacts. But we will all persevere and hopefully, will be back playing in real life situations again.
I would like to see more limited games (under 500 points) as that will give a more realistic chance of doing well, playing with people of like abilities. I enjoy club events and contests and reading about other players.
